Obituary of Wendy Jane Glavis

Please share a memory of Wendy to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Wendy Jane Glavis died on December 17, 2020. Growing up in Abington, she was the beloved daughter of Doris and F. Johnson Glavis. She graduated from Cheltenham High School, William Smith College and earned a Master's degree in English literature at St. Hugh's College, Oxford University. As a child she enjoyed teaching her doll collection; as an adult, she taught literature to upper grade students in Peterborough, England. Her fervent love of ballet began with lessons from her Mother and led to authoring short stories and books on the subject. Her mother inculcated her love of travel, which included an annual pilgrimage to Sanibel Island for shelling, bird watching and communing with alligators. Coached by her father, she had a passion for sailing at the Spray Beach Yacht Club, Beach Haven, NJ. She sailed and raced and trained new sailors with zest. Wendy was at home sailing on rough waters, wind in her face, encountering water spouts and seals. She combined her love of sailing and writing in her recently published book about the yacht club's history, "Sails in the Sun". As she departs on her final voyage, she leaves on the dock her aunt Elva Ashworth and her cousins Sandy Allen (Noel), Edward Ashworth (Sharon), Ginny Martin, Ken Ashworth and Scott Robinson (Cathy), as well as many sailing friends and former students. Graveside service will be held on Friday, May 21, 2021 at 1:00 p.m. at Lawnview Cemetery. The family suggests in lieu of flowers, a donation in Wendy's name be made to "Sailing Programs at SBYC", P.O. Box 1125, Beach Haven, NJ 08008.
