Pastor Hastings was a valuable asset to the community. The love of the Lord shone through him and onto all who he encountered. His quest to bring unity among all people is a highly admirable quality and he pursued it with a passion. His presence will be missed. To: Pamela & family; the Kempton Hastings & Lewis Family of Princeton; and to the Parish Families of ST Anne's, Abington and Christ Episcopal Church, Toms River - In the World -
How much goodness in the World shall be sustained
With the Spirit of purest Friendship and Gift of Grace
By knowing earnest soul can be what is commonplace
Like Nature and Wind, and the Sun of morning wained
The Faith we keep is the Faith we have gained
In greatest relations and the smiling face
Whose constant purpose is mete for our race
Which is never neglected and cannot be feigned
Remembering is knowing - whilst knowing is maintained
In easy confidence - as much as the heart's pace
When the Heart of the Lord beats through Life's embrace
Of Time and Space, and our Gardens when it's Rained...
Nurturing the Spirit among us will be Ordained
Having known such Souls held in Peace & pure Grace.

It can be easy to look into the Heavens, to say, "Thank you for the Life of Brewster Hastings." Albeit then, again, we will miss ye most dearly, great good friend.

Dear Family & Friends of the late Reverend K. Brewster Hastings:
I am so shocked and overwhelmingly saddened to hear about Pastor Brewster's passing. I have only known him a very short time but to know him was to love him. His personality and charisma when preaching the gospel was captivating and left an impact on my life and my heart. When I had heard he had his operation, I had been meaning to send a card of cheer or a basket to make him smile. Unfortunately I did not get a chance to. We do not grieve like the unbelievers because we know that he is now with the Lord and experiencing a joy that we could not possibly even imagine. But on this side of eternity it still hurts deeply and his passing leaves a great void in all those he came in contact with. I just needed you to know that his love for the Lord was apparent and his work for the Lord was not in vain. It has touched me and countless others. I am sure God said "well done, thy good and faithful servant" Until we meet him again, we will forever cherish his memory.
With love, prayers, and sincere condolences,
Jessica Whitfield and Family

Dear Pam.
I cannot find the words to express how sorry I am for this unexpected loss. May you find strength in the love you two share.
"This is Love: to fly toward a secret sky,
To cause a hundred veils to fall each moment.
First, to let go of life.
In the end, to take a step without feet;
to regard this world as invisible,
and to disregard what appears to the self."
-- Rumi
You'll be greatly missed dear Brewster.

We would like to extend our prayers to Pam and the whole family during this difficult time. Along with everyone else I was shocked when I heard the news. At both of our All Saints' and All Soul's Eucharists we offered our prayers of sadness, faith and gratitude for Brewster. I give thanks for Brewster's ministry at St. Annes, a church whose people formed me as a priest. Brewster was so welcoming and gracious during the services for Father Rowe,Eleanor, Gladys and at St. Anne's anniversary celebration. It is not easy to succeed the long term pastorate of a beloved Rector. That Brewster was able to do that and grow St. Annes and the people in new ways is remarkable. I have admired the new ministries that Brewster started while keeping the loving spirit of a wonderfully giving congregation intact. No easy feat. So I give thanks for Brewster and pray that he might grow from grace to grace in the kingdom of God in the continued life of loving service. May God Bless all of you in the days ahead in thankful remembrance of God's great goodness and in the joyful expectation of eternal life with Brewster and all that you love. God Bless! Bruce and Lani

Farewell to my good friend and colleague. I will genuinely miss his wit, good will, hospitality, and pastoral skills. I pray God will fill the void left by this man of God. I loved his humility and willingness not to be perfect but quick to repentance, reconciliation and restoration what an example being Christ's servant. I thank God for the privilege to do ministry with this brother. I cherish the long talks and fellowship. Prayers to the Church, his wife Pam, children and community!

As a young seminarian, I was touched deeply by Brewster's decency and courage. He was such a gentle, genuine human being--in a world of puzzling pain and injustice. We didn't keep in touch over the years, but his example was a profound one and a source of true inspiration and encouragement for me. As part of an Anti-Apartheid Team, Brewster and I were arrested together in nonviolent actions, twice in fact. What he did for me during those actions will always be with me. If it's meaningful to you all, I've written the experiences up here (http://valleyriseup.blogspot.com/2016/10/march-on-march-on.html). There are a couple of pictures of us too. May God's peace and grace stir in all of your hearts as you grieve a remarkable soul. His spirit soars.

My deepest condolences to Pamela and family. My heart literally aches at the thought that I won't again see or hear the voice of my my precious Pastor again, until...that wonderful day when Jesus comes for his church. His teachings, his support, his love, his compassion for God's work and God's people was heartfelt and uniquely authentic. I've never met such a comapssionate, true to his word person. He would light up a room with his smile! His light continues to shine through all of us who had the wonderful opportunity to sit under his bible teachings; I will deeply, deeply, sorrowfully miss him. I contnue to cover the family in daily prayer for strength and grace. I thank God for the opportunity that my husband, Ismael and I had to share in the life of Pastor Brewster & Pam.

Brewster was the age of our children. But his kindness, good example, willingness to listen and spiritual guidance meant to us "Father." He prayed with us during times of grave illnesses, consoled us during times of grieving, and rejoiced with us during happy occasions, just as a loving father would.
He will be greatly missed, not only by us, but by all who knew him.
Rest in peace, dear Father.

About twenty -five years ago, when Brewster was working in a parish near Toms River on the south Jersey shore, we decided to go fishing. We had low expectations, just a day out the beach, in the waves and spray. At the bait shop, the seasoned assistant gave us a sceptical look, suburban boys wasting their time. We got to the shore just when the real fishermen were packing up and heading home. Not in the least put off, us intrepid fishermen, baited our hooks and cast out beyond the waves. On the horizon we saw a line of birds, and a few minutes later the ocean was alive with a huge shoal of silvery Blue Fish. It was great day. We caught many. Back in Toms River, Brewster visited his parishioners bearing a gift of the days catch.

Brewster was a dear friend in college and I feel his loss deeply, I can not even begin to imagine the loss that Pamela and others who have been close to him feel. In the Jewish tradition it is said "may his memory be a blessing," as I feel I knew Brewster in almost another life all I can say is that his memory has been a blessing already.
