To the entire Shorday family,
Mr. Shorday 's charitable efforts in our community will be remembered for generations to come! Thank you for your generosity in funding the vast number of projects in and around Abington. The world lost a special larger than life character!
May Charles enjoy eternal peace with the Lord.

I never knew any of the Shordays well, and never met any of them more that what might be called a handful of times. Not to mention that I haven’t seen any of them for about 40 years. But in the case of Mr. Shorday, the few times were memorable.
Once, in the evening he sat on the floor of his living room with sweatpants on and visited with me. He was engaging and penetrating, interested in other people, not too busy, not distracted and dismissive. Since his passing I read that before he got involved in retail grocery operations, he grew produce himself. That explains some of his interest in me, I had big vegetable gardens going back to my childhood and still do to this day. Back then in the 1970’s, Burpee Seeds came out with a cantaloupe variety called Ambrosia, “ Food for the Gods.” I grew them, and brought some over to the Shordays. Not commercially, just sharing my homegrown vegetables. Mr Shorday said, “These are the best cantaloupes I’ve ever eaten.” This was a memorable compliment to a teenager, from a businessman who owned grocery stores.
Around that time he was closing a store in Philadelphia, maybe on South street. He needed the shelving removed from the store, I had a truck, so he hired me. It only took a day or maybe two, I don’t remember where I hauled the shelving. It was a straightforward deal, I got it done, he paid me. No chasing around to get paid, no renegotiating after the fact, like I learned later, are the rules with so many unscrupulous people in business. He was a totally straight, honest guy, who looked after his family, and other people.
Now, in this time of loss, his three children, my contemporaries, Charles, Lynn, and Suzanne, and his grandchildren, know they have lost an irreplaceable treasure. But he isn’t really lost inasmuch as his memory, and legacy is carried on by them. May God continue to Bless your family.
