Obituary of Richard Herbert Lassen

Richard Herbert Lassen "Dick", age 85, a resident of Abington, PA for the past 43 years, and formerly of Roslyn, PA for 18 years, passed away on October 29, 2020. He was the devoted husband of Nancy Jolly Lassen for 59 years, father, and grandfather. In addition to his wife, Dick is survived by his loving children and their spouses: Linda Lassen of Glenside, PA; Cheryl Ann Lassen (Mary Beth Chester) of Cranberry Township, PA; Scott Lassen (Janis) of Downingtown, PA, by his three grandchildren: Kate, Natalie and Caroline, and by nephews and nieces. Born November 2, 1934 in Doylestown and growing up in Germantown, Dick is survived by his twin brother Robert Lassen (Shirl) of Harleysville, PA and sister Delphine Zimmel of Hatboro. He is preceded in death by his mother Delphine Marie Holmes, father Howard Theodore Lassen, brother Howard Lassen, nephew Howard Lassen, sister-in-law Etta Lassen, brother-in-law Marvin Zimmel, and son-in-law Rick Voss. Graduating from Germantown Academy in 1953, Dick went to Temple University on a football scholarship only to return home after one year when his father passed to help his family. In 1955, Dick joined the US Army, serving two years in Fort Hamilton, New York. After more than 30 years of service at Equifax working as an Insurance Investigator, Dick retired and was able to start a new chapter in his life. Dick's true passion involved the outdoors. He loved to go to his rustic hunting cabin in Potter County where he would fish and hunt with his brothers and friends, hike through the woods, spend vacation with his family and snowmobile. One could find Dick working in the garden where he enjoyed planting flowers and vegetables. He spent hours ensuring that not a weed was found. Dick also loved sitting on the beach watching the waves, looking for dolphins while counting the boats, going for strolls and bird watching. In his younger years, Dick traveled to different places to bike with his wife. During retirement, every evening you would find him riding his bike next to his wife while she ran. Dick enjoyed participating, watching and coaching sports. As a true competitor, he grew up playing baseball and football with his twin brother through high school and college. In 2012, Dick and his twin brother were inducted into Germantown Academy's Athletic Hall of Fame. His children developed his passion for sports and competition through high school and college. Dick impacted many young people's lives while he was coaching Football and Baseball for Roslyn Athletic Association (RAA) for 8 years. Relatives and friends will be received on Friday, November 6, 2020 from 10:00 – 11:00 AM, Helweg & Rowland Funeral Home, 1500 Old York Road Abington.
