Obituary of Stewart Thomas Clegg, Jr.
Please share a memory of Stewart to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Stewart Thomas Clegg, Jr. of Hatboro, PA and Mendham, NJ went to be the Lord on November 3, 2015. Tom had a long and varied life. He was born in Philadelphia in 1935, son of the late Stewart T. Clegg, Sr. and the late Emily Elizabeth Mitchell Clegg. After graduating from Central High School (Philadelphia), Tom attended Penn State University before serving in the US Army in Korea. He married his sweetheart Doris Burlock Clegg in 1962.
Tom spent many years as a technical writer, a metals worker, and ultimately 13 years as a clerk at a neighborhood market. His grandchildren affectionately called the market, "Pop Pop's Candy Shop," and loved to visit Pop Pop at his shop. Tom enjoyed music throughout his life and will be remembered for having a beautiful baritone voice. He often sang along with popular music from the 1950s and 1960s, as well as church hymns. In addition, Tom played the xylophone in a neighborhood band in his earlier years.
Tom enjoyed spending time with family and friends, especially at events with extended family. He knew the preferences of each of his grandchildren and would find just the right gift for him or her for birthdays and holidays. Each year Tom and Doris would sing Happy Birthday in perfect harmony over the phone to their daughters on their birthdays.
Tom is survived by his loving wife of 53 years, Doris, his daughters, Pamela B. Berg (Edward) of Mendham, NJ, Alyse C. Schmidt (Steven) of East Norriton, PA, Linda A. Malhotra (Naveen) of Spain, and Laura M. Helouvry (Yann) of France. He is also survived by 9 grandchildren; Casey, Trevor, Gavin, and Tanner Schmidt, Rachel and Jake Berg, Sophia and Julia Malhotra, and Ella Helouvry. A sister, Barbara Holmes of Chester County, PA, sisters-in-law Janet R. Aiken of Ocean City, NJ and Barbara B. Steppe (Woodard) of Clearwater, Florida also survive, along with many nieces and nephews. Tom was a member of Hatboro Baptist Church in Hatboro, PA. Tom's family wishes to thank the staff of Holly Manor in Mendham, NJ for the compassionate care they provided to Tom.
