Obituary of Philip John Baur

Philip J. Baur, Jr, age 84, a resident of Normandy Farm Estates in Blue Bell for the past ten years and formerly of Ambler died on August 30, 2015. He was the devoted husband of Barbara Joyce Baur for 62 years.
Born in Philadelphia, he was the son of the late Philip J. Baur, Sr. and the late Emma M. Weber Baur. He graduated from William Penn Charter School in 1948. In 1952, he earned his Bachelor's degree from Haverford College.
His 35-year working career was spent with Tasty Baking Company in Philadelphia from which he retired as Chairman and CEO in 1987.
Dedicated to his faith and community, Phil served on the board of World Evangelical Alliance, North American Council and in 1952 served as Vice-Chairman of the Philadelphia Billy Graham Crusade. He was a former board member of PrimeSource Corporation, Juvenile Diabetes Foundation, Gospel Volunteers, Philadelphia Leadership Prayer Breakfast, Alliance of Confessing Evangelicals, Pennsylvania Manufacturers Insurance Company, YMCA of Philadelphia, Fleer Corporation, American Baker's Association, Geographic Society of Philadelphia, Christian Business Men's Committee, Sunday Breakfast Club, World Affairs Council of Philadelphia and served on the board of Bethel Seminary of the East from 1988-1995 and served as acting President form 1995-2002. He was a life-time member of the Union League of Philadelphia.
In 1984, Phil received the Distinguished Citizen Award from the Philadelphia Council of Boy Scouts.
He loved spending time with his family, and he also enjoyed tennis, wind-surfing, sailing, travel and bird-watching.
In addition to his wife, Phil is survived by his children and their spouses: Susan B. and
Barry Beatty, Sandra B. and William Bixby, Philip J. III and Ann Baur, Peter G. and Lois Baur, Paul D. and Allison Baur; by daughter-in-law, Sumila Baur; by 17 grandchildren and by 10 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his son, Andrew M. Baur, MD, and by his sisters; Marguerite Emma Baur, Louise Baur Kaiser and Marie Baur Crouse Dillin.
Memorial service will be held at 3:00 PM on Saturday, September 12, 2015, at Chelten: a church of hope, 1601 N. Limekiln Pike, Dresher, PA. Friends will be received after the service. Interment in Whitemarsh Memorial Park will be private. Memorial contributions may be sent to: Chelten: a church of hope, 1601 N. Limekiln Pike, Dresher, PA 19025.
