Obituary of Jean Savacool Barker

JEAN SAVACOOL BARKER, age 94, a resident of Gloria Dei in Hatboro and formerly of Jericho Manor in Abington, Wilkes-Barre, PA and Philadelphia, PA died on October 18, 2014. She was the beloved wife of Keith Carlton Barker for 27 years. Born in Pottstown, PA, Jean was the daughter of the late Jacob S. Savacool and the late Anna Long Savacool. After graduating from Coughlin High School in Wilkes-Barre, Jean studied at Lankenau Hospital School of Nursing and at Cornell Medical Center in New York. Jean was a Registered Nurse and Supervisor of the Obstetrics and Gynecology Department at Lankenau Hospital before retiring in 1982. She was a member of the Lankenau Nurses Alumni, Pennsylvania State Nurses Association and American Nurses Association. She was a long-time member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Melrose Park where she was an usher, greeter and active in visiting church members that could not attend services. She enjoyed traveling, reading, writing, knitting, fishing, walking and exercise. In addition to her husband, she is survived by her dear step-sons: John E. Barker and James W. Barker; by three grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and by her loving sister, Esther S. Wood. Funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM on Thursday, October 23, 2014, St. John's Lutheran Church, Melrose Avenue and Old York Road, Melrose Park, where friends will be received from 10:00 AM until the time of the service. Interment will be in St. Andrews Union Cemetery, Perkasie, PA.
