Obituary of Robert William Lloyd

Please share a memory of Robert to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Dr. Robert William Lloyd died suddenly of natural causes on April 18, 2014. He was a pediatric dentist caring for children, teens and special needs patients for over 40 years in his private practice in Jenkintown, PA. In addition he cared for the residents at The Home of the Merciful Savior in Philadelphia and The Lynch Home in Gwynedd Valley. "Bob," as he was known by most, was a member of the dental staff at both Abington Hospital and Children's Hospital of Philadelphia for 39 years. Bob was born in Youngstown, Ohio in 1943 and moved to Chicago as a boy. He graduated from DePauw University, in Greencastle, Indiana, where he was a Sigma Chi. After earning his D.M.D. from Tufts University School of Dental Medicine, Bob joined the Army. He was stationed at Fort Jackson, South Carolina before serving a tour in Vietnam, where he was stationed at the main dental clinic in Hanoi and completed dental service missions to forward bases. He received a Bronze Star and a citation for community outreach to the local population. Upon returning home, he completed his dental residency at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, where he was chief resident of the pediatric program. He then went into practice with Dr. Manuel Album in Jenkintown, running Dentistry for Children, Inc. after Dr. Album's retirement until the present. His office staff is comprised of some of the most loyal and finest managers, assistants and hygienists in the profession. He created the warmest atmosphere for his employees and patients; a most welcoming and positive environment for both patients and parents. He was a member of the American Dental Association, the PA Dental Association and a Diplomat of the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry. Bob's involvement with the Rotary Club of Jenkintown included a term as President and many years on the Executive Committee. He was the pancake chef at the annual fundraising breakfast to benefit the community and Rotary service projects – this year he broke his record by flipping close to 1,000 pancakes! The Rotary motto "Service above Self" exemplified his devotion to the organization and the community at large. He volunteered as a coach and parent organizer for many of his children's activities. Along with his wife Bonnie's involvement on the Women's Board of Abington Health, he supported and volunteered at most of their fund raising events. Bob was the embodiment of a loving and caring family man. He and Bonnie were married for 48 years, raising two daughters - Christine and Gwynn, and a son, Andrew. As the family grew to include spouses and grandchildren his joy expanded to embrace and include everyone. He somehow struck the perfect balance of strength and humility, practicality and fun. Whether you called him Bobby, Dad, or Pops, you could count on him to share a poignant moment with you one moment, and maybe squirt whipped cream in your face the next! Sailing aboard the family sloop, Anemone, on the Chesapeake Bay was a favorite summer activity. Many sailing trips in the Caribbean Islands kept him at the helm in the colder months. Traveling, tennis, pottery, golf and trap shooting were some of his favorite activities. He was a member of Abington Presbyterian Church and Huntington Valley Country Club. He embraced all that was good in the world, and was both trusted by, and trusting of, everyone he encountered. He was a gentleman of a gentle nature, and acted as mentor to many. He will be sorely missed by his family, friends, and the community – we are all better off for having had him in our lives. Memorial service will be held at 6:30 PM on Friday, April 25, 2014, Abington Presbyterian Church, 1082 Old York Road, Abington, where friends will be received after the service. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to Rotary Club of Jenkintown, P.O. Box 191, Jenkintown, PA 19046 or to Abington Health Foundation, 1200 Old York Road, Abington, PA 19001.
