Edwin Ralph McDevitt, Jr., D.D.S., died suddenly on April 30, 2010, while planting his garden. Born in Philadelphia on September 8, 1928, to E. Ralph and Elizabeth A. McDevitt, Ralph grew up in Laverock and graduated from Cheltenham High School in 1946. He attended the University of Pennsylvania and graduated from its School of Dental Medicine in 1953, commencing a 57-year career in dentistry from which he never retired. He married E. Jean Purnell in 1952. Following 2 years of service in the U.S. Navy as a dentist attached to a Marine unit, Ralph and Jean returned to the Philadelphia area and settled in Roslyn. They had 5 children, and with the growth of the family moved to Abington. Ralph and Jean lived in this house for 41 years, moving to Rydal Park in 2004. Ralph's devotion and loyalty were expressed in the length of his commitments. A faithful member of Abington Presbyterian Church for more than 50 years, he served as an elder, Sunday school teacher, and Sunday school superintendent. He was an active member of the Germantown Lions Club, the Pastorius Club, and Manufacturer's Golf and Country Club. He served on the staff of Germantown Hospital. In addition to his dentistry and community involvement, Ralph was a passionate fisherman, gardener and sports fan, especially devoted to the Phillies. He had many friends and enjoyed all people. Ralph is survived by his wife of 57 years, Jean, and by four children, Jody (Dan Krebill) of Bozeman, MT, Robin (Tim Morgenthaler) of Rochester, MN, Chris (Paula) of West Caln, PA, and Ralph III (Tink) of Jenkintown, PA, as well as 12 grandchildren. He was predeceased by his parents, his sister, Jeannette M. Greeson, and his son Doug. His memorial service will be held at 4:00 pm on Thursday, May 6, 2010, Abington Presbyterian Church, Old York and Susquehanna Roads, Abington, where friends will be received from 3:00 until the time of the service. Memorial gifts may be made to Abington Presbyterian Church, 1082 Old York Road, Abington, PA 19001 or to a charity of the donor's choice.
