Obituary of Karen Brown Appel

Please share a memory of Karen to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Karen Ann Brown Appel (1958-2026) passed away in Abington, PA on January 29th, 2026. Her last days were spent resting peacefully surrounded by family and friends.

Karen was a deeply loving and compassionate soul who touched the lives of all who knew her. She walked the path of the healer in every moment and was dedicated to uplifting others and seeing the innate goodness in all beings.

Karen embodied these virtues in her personal life, family, and career as a geriatric social worker. Her childhood home was on the grounds of Friends Hospital in Philadelphia where her father was an administrator. There she grew up among the hundred acre wood and azalea gardens with her Old English Sheepdog, Bartholomew. After graduating with a Bachelors in Social Work from Kutztown University and a Masters in Gerontology from St. Joseph's University, Karen went on to work at Friends where she met her beloved husband Bruce (Married 1986). That year, Karen and Bruce moved into the family home in Abington, PA where they would raise their two children together.

As a mother, Karen gave every ounce of her being to cultivating a deeply meaningful and nurturing childhood for her two kids, Daniel (now Lily) and Jesse. In every moment of their upbringing she shared her endless creativity, brilliant curiosity, and a magical love of life and laughter. She taught them how to navigate both the darkness and the light with an unshakable inner spark of optimism and to strive to share compassion and peace with others.

Karen was an animal lover, music lover, gamer, artist, photographer, traveler, believer in unicorns, and friend to the wee folk. Karen's mother, Jean Mackay Brown, shared this rare spark of inner goodness, magic, and creativity, and always remained enshrined in Karen's heart and being.

Karen Appel is survived by Bruce, her husband of 40 years, her children Jesse and Lily, her brother John Gary Brown, her nieces and nephews Jean, Emily, Zachary, Mallory and Ali and her kitties Vinnie, Vale, and Snowdrop. She was preceded in death by her mother Jean Mackay Brown, father Jack Brown, and brother David Brown.

Growing up, this poem by Grandma Jean hung in our house, handwritten, in a wooden frame.

Through these words, now written into my own heart, I can feel the warmth, love of life, and threads of magic that weave through generations and become people like my Mom, and her mom before her.

I like to think of leprechauns,

Of forests wild and free.

Of mountains reaching for the sun,

Of children hugging me.

I think of books still to be read,

Of music still to hear.

Of wonders that are still ahead

I think too much, I fear.

Yet from 'I Think'

Soon comes 'I Know',

I know that life is good.
