Obituary of Anne Florence Puhl
Please share a memory of Anne to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Anne Florence Puhl (known to family and friends as "Nancy") 93, died peacefully in hospice at Springhouse Estates in Lower Gwynedd, PA on November 17, 2025, lovingly surrounded by family and friends.
Nancy was born on January 29, 1932, in Abington, PA, the daughter of Edward John and Margaret Dennisson (Levering) Puhl. She had a younger sister, Ellen Lee Puhl. Nancy and her family lived in the Mount Airy neighborhood of Philadelphia, PA. Nancy graduated from Stevens School in Germantown and then continued her education by attaining a Bachelor of Arts degree at the University of Delaware and a Master of Education degree at Temple University.
Nancy's adventuresome spirit and her love of teaching motivated her to seek an elementary school position at the international school associated with at the Supreme Headquarters of the Allied Powers of Europe (S.H.A.P.E.) first in Verdun, France and then in Mons, Belgium. For the next 30 years, Nancy dedicated her life to teaching the children of officers and enlisted personnel posted to NATO. When she was not teaching, Nancy filled her days restoring an old farmhouse, riding horses, gardening, spending time with her friends, and traveling to more than 30 countries.
Despite living far away, Nancy devoted a lot of time and energy to her parents, her sister Ellen and her nieces and nephews during the summers when she came home to Philadelphia for a vacation. Nancy never married or had children, but she dearly loved her nieces and nephews and their children, and in turn, they all loved their energetic, fascinating aunt who entertained everyone with her stories about her world travel and her "farmette" in Belgium.
Once Nancy retired and returned home to the Philadelphia area, she did not slow down one bit. She filled her time with her greyhound companions, camping trips, gardening, cooking international foods, reading historical fiction, going to the theatre, and sketching. After she sold her historic home in Jenkintown in 2009, Nancy moved to Spring House Estates in Lower Gwynedd, PA, an ACTS continuing care retirement community, where her sister Ellen resided. The "dynamic duo" of Nancy and Ellen thoroughly enjoyed the many social and recreational activities that Springhouse offered and they lovingly supported one another when either one of them experienced a health problem.
Nancy was a member of Grace Presbyterian Church in Jenkintown, PA and helped to start and provide food for Grace Place, a social and lunch program for area seniors that was held on Fridays at the church. Nancy was also very active with the nondenominational Protestant congregation that worshipped together at Spring House Estates. Nancy was a volunteer with the Art Goes to School program at local elementary schools as well as a backstage helper at Stage Crafters. She was an active member of the Springhouse Estate Questers program.
Nancy was predeceased by her parents, Margaret and Edward Puhl and her brother-in-law, Reverend Robert M. Hoag, She leaves behind many family members who will greatly miss her infectious laugh and generous spirit: her sister Ellen Puhl Hoag; her nieces Nancy (Bill) Rasweiler and Janet Hoag (Robert Clevenger), her nephews David (Lisa) Hoag, Robert (ChristyAnn) Hoag, and Jonathan (Mary Jane) Hoag; her great-nieces and nephews, Alyssa Rasweiler, Kelly Hoag, Ian Rasweiler (Amanda); Hannah Hoag Lee (Parker); Matthew Quinn; Jessica Hoag; Allison Quinn; and Alexander Hoag; and her great-great nephew, Cameron Rasweiler. She also leaves behind many dear friends at Springhouse Estates, her home for the last 15 years.
Nancy's life will be celebrated at a memorial service on Sunday, December 21st at 1 PM at Grace Presbyterian Church located at 444 York Road, Jenkintown, PA 19046. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations can be made to one of Nancy's valued organizations, which include Grace Presbyterian Church; Montgomery County S.P.C.A., and Stage Crafters in Chestnut Hill.
