Obituary of Alicia A. Stokes
Please share a memory of Alicia to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Alicia Atlin Stokes, age 87, a resident of Blue Bell for nearly 50 years, passed away on March 31, 2025. Alicia was the beloved wife of Walter M. Stokes for 66 years (who swooped in when her blind date went awry).
Born in West Hartford, CT, Alicia was the daughter of the late Paavo "Flash" Atlin and the late Martha Leino Atlin. After graduating from Bulkeley High School in 1955, she attended Wheelock College in Boston to study teaching, and in 1959 she received her Bachelor's degree in education.
Alicia loved teaching young children and taught elementary school at Enfield Elementary School followed by several years as a pre-school teacher at Abington Presbyterian Church. She then moved on to retail sales at Talbots in a quest to accumulate red boxes. After retirement, Alicia could not get the teaching bug out of her system and for several years volunteered as an assistant reading teacher in the Wissahickon elementary and middle school system. She was a member of Abington Presbyterian Church in Abington, PA for 15 years.
Alicia was a devoted wife and mother, with a mischievous smile and a ready laugh. An avid and knowledgeable fan of all things sports, Alicia could always be found with a game of some kind on in the background. She played tennis year-round and enjoyed being out in the garden, on a Nantucket beach, or by the pool. An excellent cook, she loved treating her family and friends to her legendary quiche and stollen every Christmas.
She is survived by her husband Walt, their three sons: David William Stokes, Sean Atlin Stokes, and Timothy Anderson Stokes (with his wife Anne Marie), as well as eight grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.
A service celebrating Alicia's life will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, June 14, 2025, at Abington Presbyterian Church, 1082 Old York Road, Abington, where relatives and friends will be received from 10:00 AM until the time of the service. A reception will follow the service.
