It is a very sad day when I saw the announcement of Joan's passing. I grew up with Joan throughout her career with AONA. She was always honest, always fair but most important very thoughtful and concerned with all people - employees, faculty and students, I do not believe that the. AONA educational system could have developed as it has without Joan's. commitment to the organization and the principles involved in the world of GME education. She was also a true friend not only to me but to my family. She always wanted to know what was happening and if traveling with her we always had to have dinner together. Joan will always be remembered by me as one of the most enthusiastic happiest and committed people I have known.

My professional relationship with Joan began in or around 1989, when I was hired to diagnose and repair issues with the AONA video system. Not long after, Joan contracted me to work courses, and she was at most or all of over 100 courses I worked before her retirement in 2005.
As fellow road warriors we got to be good friends. Joan was always fair, but she could be tough. She did not accept anything less than excellence, and this set the tone for AO courses that I believe persists to this day. Our friendship continued after her retirement, with our last visit being in 2013 and our last phone conversation around her birthday in 2022.
She was always concerned with and supportive of the AO faculty, and understood clearly the value that they brought to medical education in general and to AO North America in particular. It was a privilege to work with her, and I will be forever grateful for the role she played in my career. Thank you Joan!

Everyone (and I mean everyone) wanted to work/teach at AONA courses in the 80s and 90s - the content was fresh and the AO spirit was rich, but it was Joan’s professionalism and course leadership/precision that kept us anxious to teach again - she was our guide, quality control, friend, colleague, and gold standard. Not just from me but from her huge AONA fan base, please know that we all send our love, sympathy, and respect! God’s blessings upon you all!
